A Saanich veterinary professional has been recognized on a national stage for her dedication to animal care.
Leah Penner, registered veterinary technologist and practice manager at Pacific Cat Clinic, has been named Veterinary Professional of the Year by Trupanion pet medical insurance.
This year’s awards drew nearly 1,700 nominations and more than 47,000 public votes. Only 12 winners were selected across North America.
“I was pretty surprised and didn't expect it at all,” said Penner. “I knew that my coworkers had been pushing it out to social media to get votes in for me, but I definitely didn't expect to win anything.”
Penner was praised by her team for her leadership, professionalism, grace and tireless work in two demanding roles as a tech and manager at the Ravine Way clinic – something she said is like accomplishing “two very different full-time jobs at the same time.”
“Everybody in the vet world works very hard, and we often carry multiple roles within the practice,” she said. “It's nice that people can see that I'm working so hard and I'm still able to present myself well.
“It's not always an easy task, but I always try to put my best foot forward.”
Despite the everyday challenges, Penner said it’s those very moments that make the job both entertaining and fulfilling, even after all these years.
“My favourite part of the job is that no two days are ever the same,” she said. “It's always an adventure every day and I get to do that with my amazing team that helps me, the vets, the cats, and the clients.
“That's what I love about it.”
