The Recovery Day event, organized by Our Place Society and the Umbrella Society, honours those who have embraced sobriety or are living with substance-use issues.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, head to a free, family-friendly gathering in Victoria's Central Park to celebrate Recovery Day.

Every year, as a part of Recovery Month, people across Canada attend Recovery Day events to honour those who have embraced sobriety or are struggling with substance-use issues.

Hosted by local non-profits Our Place Society and the Umbrella Society, both of which provide mental health and substance-use supports in Victoria, the event will offer attendees the opportunity to access valuable information about substance-use and recovery services from 16 local support organizations. Two people will also going to share their stories about recovery.

“Recovery Day is more than just a celebration,” said Evan James, Umbrella Society's manager of training and education, in a news release. “We want to show that recovery is possible for everyone ... that there is a fulfilling life beyond addiction.”

Attendees will have access to food trucks, a vendors' market and live music and comedy shows. Musical acts include The Peachy Sundays, OAKES and Tragically Hip cover band Nautical Disaster. Kids can enjoy an inflatable park, crafting stations, face painting and more.

“The opposite of addiction is connection," added Lee Sundquist, the manager of the Our Place Society's New Roads Therapeutic Recovery Community, in the same news release. "In honour of national Recovery Month, we are thrilled to bring our community together to connect and celebrate that recovery is possible and that we do recover.”
