A Saanichton restaurant will be closed for the time being after a fire. The Central Saanich Fire Department received a call about the fire at Wai Heung just before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 16).

“The cause of the fire was probably from some sort of malfunction in the kitchen hood suppression system,” Central Saanich Fire Chief Kenn Mount said. “It discharged, but it wasn’t enough.”

The fire was quickly extinguished, and there were no injuries.

“We were able to kind of contain all the damage to the kitchen area,” Mount said. “We were able to put it out and stop any further spread with the support of crews coming from Sidney and North Saanich. There’s probably some water damage in the restaurant. It’s going to probably be at least several weeks until they get some sort of action in there.”

There was no damage to the adjacent buildings.
