Kateryna Bandura is the new assistant managing editor for Black Press Media's Victoria hub.

In the bustling world of 24-hour news cycles and global headlines, I've found my calling in the quiet corners of local communities. As the new assistant managing editor at Black Press Media's Victoria hub, I'm driven by a simple yet powerful belief: every community has a story worth telling, and it's our job to uncover it.

My journey in journalism has been guided by an unwavering passion for unearthing the narratives that shape our neighbourhoods, celebrate local triumphs, and illuminate the paths to new opportunities for our residents. It's not about the byline or the accolades; it's about the impact these stories have on the very fabric of our community.

One of the recent stories I worked on before joining Black Press that exemplifies this passion for me is the tale of Victoria’s Kahler family, whose combined 140-plus years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces paints a vivid picture of our nation's history and values. From Second World War veterans to modern-day service members, their legacy spans generations and embodies the very essence of commitment and patriotism. Sharing stories such as this one not only honours individual sacrifices but also weaves the broader tapestry of our national identity.

Military journalism taught me a crucial lesson: some communities are brimming with important stories that go unnoticed. This realization fuels my drive to dive deep into communities, seeking out the stories that matter most to people. I know the stories are there; my job is to find them and give them the voice they deserve.

In my new role at Black Press Media, I aim to instill this passion in my team. My goal is ambitious yet simple: I want my journalists to be recognized when they walk down the streets of the communities they cover. This recognition would be a testament to our deep engagement with local issues and our commitment to amplifying the voices that make each community unique.

My approach to journalism is rigid but fair, always striving to cover stories that are both impactful and unforgettable. I believe in the power of local journalism to make a tangible difference in people's lives, especially in an era of information overload.

As I embark on this new chapter, I'm excited to bring my unique perspective – shaped by my international background and military reporting experience – to the vibrant communities of Greater Victoria. I'm here not just to observe and report, but to become an integral part of the community fabric, weaving together the stories that define who we are and where we're going.

In a world where global news is at our fingertips, I stand firm in my belief that community-focused journalism is more vital than ever. It's not just about reporting events; it's about capturing the essence of our shared experiences, celebrating our achievements, and illuminating the paths to new opportunities. This is the journalism I'm passionate about, and this is the standard I aim to set at Black Press Media.
