Confrontation over hedges in Oak Bay leads to assault charge

A confrontation while trimming hedges turned violent on the 1000 block of Beach Drive in Oak Bay.

A confrontation while trimming hedges turned violent on the 1000 block of Beach Drive in Oak Bay.

Police report the complainant was trimming hedges on Aug. 29 when an unknown female became irate and slapped the complainant in the cheek. The woman departed the scene but police later received a call that she was back in the area. Police arrested a 49-year-old female for assault and she was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

That was just one of the 80 calls Oak Bay Police responded to during the week of Aug. 26 to Sept. 1.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 27, police responded to a call of a male uttering threats in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Avenue. A 47-year-old man was arrested for uttering threats and was found in possession of a knife in violation of a court order. Police also located a female’s identification on the suspect which had been reported stolen to Victoria police in April. Daniel Poisson was charged with breach of a release order, possession of property obtained by crime and uttering threats. Poisson was remanded in custody until his next court appearance Sept. 10. 

A cyclist was taken to the hospital with a cracked rib after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Foul Bay Road and Byron Street Aug. 29. Police determined the driver of the vehicle did not leave enough room when attempting to pass the cyclist. A 70-year-old female was issued a ticket for failing to pass at a safe distance.

A 74-year-old man who attempted to turn around at a police road check on Beach Drive near Cattle Point was given a roadside suspension Aug. 29. Police report the man displayed symptoms of having consumed alcohol and a breath sample produced a result of warn, indicating a blood alcohol level of between 60-99 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. He was issued a three-day driving prohibition and his vehicle impounded for three days.
