A controversial public ping pong table at Humboldt Plaza may find a new home.

The Humboldt bikeway is closed from Douglas street to Penwall Street through Aug. 18 to allow for large equipment working on the adjacent Telus Ocean development.

Telus’ future Victoria office looks to eventually house more than 450 employees in an 11-storey, mostly-glass facade and zero-carbon building, which will also have ground-floor commercial space.

On the street nearby, only a faded street mural remains of the plaza created there in 2019 that included benches and table tennis.

When the project was first announced, some people – including the Grumpy Taxpayer$ – questioned the cost of a project they said few would use.

The city said because the table is a moveable asset it could land anywhere. No decision has been made yet.

The table, including purchase, tax and delivery cost $5,150, the city told Victoria News when it was installed in 2019.
