Decrease in reliability, reduced engagement on the X platform prompts change

The Capital Regional District is poised to leave the 'dumpster fire' that is X behind in 2025.

The Capital Regional District is officially off X as of April 10.

The regional board opted to discontinue use after considering the social media platform’s evolving policies and the CRD’s commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive online presence. The decrease in reliability and the reduced engagement on the X platform prompted a focus on more consistent communication channels.

“The decision to discontinue the use of X reflects our commitment to ensuring reliable and effective communication with our community,” board chair Cliff McNeil-Smith said in a news release. “We believe we can better serve our residents through more dependable channels and encourage everyone to subscribe to our email notifications to stay updated with the latest news, alerts, and public notices.”

The CRD, which serves 13 communities on the south Island, will inform followers on X that it will no longer post nor respond to questions or comments on the account and direct followers to other social media channels and crd.ca for information.
