This year, the Capital Regional District (CRD) awarded 101 grants totalling $2.7 million to support non-profit arts organizations in Greater Victoria.

Managed by the CRD-funded Arts Commission, the Arts and Culture Support Service delivered this funding.

“I hope this funding will continue to support and inspire local artists and creators to continue their incredible contributions to the arts and culture of Greater Victoria,” said Arts Commission chair Marianne Alto. “Their work creates the fabric of community and helps nurture community well-being.”

The B.C. Black History Awareness Society (BCBHAS) was one of the grant recipients. Its executive director Jamila Douhaibi emphasized how important arts funding is in helping non-profits achieve their goals.

"Grants of any kind are so important in supporting the [BCBHAS's] ability to create more awareness of Black history in the CRD and around the province," said Douhaibi in an email.

This year, CRD awarded more than $100,000 more in funding than it did in 2023. The amount the Commission awards next year will depend on CRD board approval.

“Arts and culture should be acknowledged for its social and economic value,” said Alto. "I hope the CRD will consider increasing these budgets each year."
