VicPD officers narrowly escaped injury on Monday, July 28, after a male suspect was alleged to have driven a stolen car into oncoming traffic on Douglas Street.

The vehicle was stolen from a business on the 700 block of Summit Avenue, and VicPD officers witnessed the theft, according to a press release.

After driving onto Douglas Street, the car was seen driving northbound, and officers lost sight of it. A member of the public spotted it after witnessing dangerous driving behaviour on the 700 block of Finlayson Street.

Integrated Canine Services helped locate the car, and officers tried to prevent it from fleeing again, but the driver struck a police vehicle and left the area.

At 9:45 p.m., the vehicle travelled to Oak Street in Saanich, where two VicPD police cars intentionally rammed into the stolen car.

The suspect had exited the car and tried to flee on foot but was apprehended by officers. He is now in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, July 30.

No officers sustained major injuries, with one being transported to hospital due to a minor concern.
