Throw on a tie-dye T-shirt and get ready for a look at a group of jam band pioneers who have helped shape American culture and music since forming in 1965.
From Aug. 14 to 17, IMAX Victoria and other theatres across North America will show The Grateful Dead Movie – a 152-minute cult classic upgraded from the 1977 original.
Boasting interviews with the band and crew, "mind-bending” animation and live performances, the documentary offers an inside look at the Grateful Dead’s five-night run of concerts at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in 1974. It also offers an in-depth look at the band’s fans and their deep commitment to the Dead Head lifestyle.
The larger-than-life presentation has been remastered for IMAX, and the fresh showings boast a post-credit performance from the Winterland shows not included in the official release.
“It was the greatest screening I’ve ever experienced of a film I’ve seen hundreds of times,” the Grateful Dead’s archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux said in a news release.
