Victoria’s Downtown Y is moving to the mall, which means no pool, gym or racquet courts but a vibrant new location atop the Bay Centre.
“The Downtown Y has always been defined by the thousands of people we serve every day, and the volunteers and staff who serve them. This opportunity provides us an amazing new space to continue coming together right in the heart of the city,” CEO Derek Gent said in a YMCA YWCA of Vancouver Island announcement Tuesday (May 6).
The community centre has been at 851 Broughton St. for more than 50 years but sold the building to Vancouver-based Concert Real Estate Corporation for $21.9 million in 2018, with an agreement to allow up to seven years to relocate. The company previously unveiled plans for a 26-storey tower and 11-storey building on the site that would include 220 condos and 150 purpose-built rental units.
The move into the 20,000-square-foot space that was previously occupied by Goodlife Fitness at the Bay Centre will take place in early 2026 or sooner once renovations are complete.
“We are thrilled to welcome a beloved community pillar – an organization that has nurtured Greater Victoria for so many years. This will help create a vibrant hub on the fourth level that will boost the health and wellness of our employees, tenants and downtown,” said Darlene Hollstein, Bay Centre general manager.
Despite dropping some amenities, the new location expects to offer the majority of currently available programs, classes and equipment, including drop-off childminding services for members. The YMCA YWCA licensed childcare will remain on Broughton Street until a new location is found.
The Y plans to work with businesses and organizations, as well as the city to provide alternative services.
“Our Y will continue to support healthy people coming together to strengthen our community in Victoria's downtown. We offer an essential ‘third space’, outside home or work, as a local charity with a 150-year track record here,” Gent said.
Y members can access the Westhills site in Langford which does have a pool. At the Bay Centre, members will enjoy free parking while they visit the Y.
