A driver of a 2024 Hyundai Elantra is now $1,000 in the hole after they were caught going more than 75 km/h over the speed limit.

A West Shore RCMP officer was reportedly passed by the vehicle on the Trans Canada Highway near Helmken Road in View Royal just after midnight on March 4.

The officer’s police laser clocked the vehicle travelling at 165 km/h in the 90km/h posted speed limit zone on the highway.

When the driver was pulled over they presented the officer with a photo of their driver’s licence as they didn’t have a physical copy with them. According to Cpl. Nancy Sagger, this is not accepted under the law as drivers must carry a physical copy of their license with them while operating a motor vehicle.

The driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speeding and failure to produce a driver’s licence, amounting to more than $1,000 in fines. The vehicle was also towed and impounded for seven days.
