An erratic driver who dangerously attempted to pass three other cars over a blind corner on Highway 4 has been ticketed, according to Port Alberni RCMP.
On Aug. 9, 2024, at approximately 5:15 p.m., Port Alberni RCMP say they received a report of an erratic driver travelling on Highway 4 from Qualicum Beach, west toward Port Alberni. A witness told police that the driver of a White Chevrolet Tahoe was travelling at high speeds and crossed double solid lines, attempting to pass multiple vehicles at a single time.
A dashcam video, which was shared on social media, showed the Tahoe narrowly avoiding a head-on collision with oncoming traffic in Cathedral Grove as it passed three vehicles at a curve in the roadway.
"This type of unacceptable driving behaviour often has tragic consequences," said Port Alberni RCMP Inspector Kim Bruce. "This event was a near miss."
Members of the RCMP were not able to intercept the vehicle on Highway 4, but after reviewing dashcam footage, they located the vehicle at the residence of its registered owner and have issued violation tickets under the BC Motor Vehicle Act.
Police have not specified who the driver was, or which tickets have been issued.
Port Alberni RCMP say they are thankful to the witness and community members who reported the dangerous driving.
"Speeding is one of the leading causes of car crash fatalities in B.C.," said Const. Beth O'Connor, media relations officer for the Port Alberni RCMP.
