The roar of engines caught an officer’s attention and led to the impound of two motorcycles in Saanich.

On Friday, July 14 at approximately 10:30 p.m. an officer with B.C. Highway Patrol’s Capital Regional District Integrated Road Safety Unit was conducting enforcement southbound on the Trans-Canada Highway near the McKenzie overpass.

The officer observed two motorcycles travelling under the overpass at a high rate of speed, which was clocked at 143 km/h in the 80 km/h zone.

The KTM and Kawasaki bikes were impounded for one week and the two riders were issued $483 fines for excessive speeding under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act. They will also be responsible for the impound and towing fees.

“We want motorcyclists to enjoy travelling on our beautiful Island this summer, but we have seen a number of impoundments involving motorcycles due to excessive speed recently. We would like to remind all road users including motorcyclists to please obey the posted speed limits so that we may all get to our destinations safely,” said Staff Sgt. Adam Tallboy, acting officer in charge of B.C. Highway Patrol’s Vancouver Island division, in a statement.

Motorists can expect to see enhanced enforcement throughout the province during the Summer CounterAttack Impaired Driving Campaign.
