Lottie Campbell, a Grade 12 student at Esquimalt High School, received a $100,000 scholarship.

A graduating Grade 12 student at Esquimalt High School has been selected to receive a $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to study chemistry at the University of Victoria this fall.

Lottie Campbell was nominated by her school scholarship committee for her "outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements" and is the first-ever Esquimalt High School nominee to win a Schulich Leader Scholarship.

“Ever since I was little, I’ve known I loved science, and interning in the research lab at BC Cancer Agency’s Deeley Centre proved to me that research is my calling,” said Campbell in a news release. “Receiving this scholarship is a huge honour and will let me focus on my studies and pursuing lab opportunities during my degree, without having to worry about financing it. When I got the congratulations email, I was at work and had to read it three times to make sure it was true. I couldn’t believe it. I told my coworkers I was taking a break, called my mom, and cried.”

At the June 15 school board meeting, her achievement was recognized with a speech from Ally Hoffman, a school guidance counsellor and scholarship committee member, while Lottie’s parents and other school staff looked on, including Esquimalt High principal Sarah Garr.

“As a member of our school’s Challenge program, Lottie engaged in all the opportunities available to her, such as robotics and Deely (internship) as well as dual credit programs at Camosun College to accelerate her learning. She is highly intelligent, scientifically curious, and never shies away from an opportunity to learn. She is also a kind and engaging young person. We are very excited to see what the future holds for Lottie," noted Hoffman in the release.

A total of 100 STEM scholarships are being awarded to Canadian and Israeli students – with 50 engineering scholarships valued at $120,000 each and 50 science, technology, or math scholarships valued at $100,000 each.
