The wastewater treatment plant that serves Greater Victoria could emit some different smells in coming days.

The carbon that captures odours at various points in the system is nearing the end of useful life expectancy and being replaced at the McLoughlin Wastewater Treatment Plant in Esquimalt, the Capital Regional District said in a service notice.

When carbon is nearing the end of its useful life, odours may increase and replacement of the carbon could generate intermittent odours.

Current weather conditions are favourable for the maintenance. Should weather conditions change substantially, maintenance will be re-rescheduled.

The plant provides wastewater treatment for the core municipalities of Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich, Oak Bay, View Royal, Colwood and Langford and the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations.

While the impending smells are attributed to maintenance in this instance, the plant has not been immune to odour complaints since opening in 2020. The CRD recorded 101 official complaints in 2022.

Odour concerns can be directed to wastewater@crd.bc.ca.

The CRD expects work to be complete by Aug. 2.
