The RCMP Explosives Device Unit responded to a report of a "suspicious item" located in the 300-block of Island Highway in View Royal.
West Shore RCMP – who first responded to the report at around 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6 – created a safety perimeter and surrounding residences and businesses were notified.
Island Highway was closed in both directions between Helmcken Road and Jedburgh Road.
Photos of the scene, in front of the Salvation Army Thrift Store, show a fridge that had been taped shut with the words "Do Not Open" and "Call Bomb Squad" scribbled on the front.
"I think it's just like scary to think that somebody would target that, and also do they know what's in the fridge or did they bring in the bomb squad just in case?" said one resident who lived nearby.
After using a robot to examine the fridge, RCMP determined it was not an explosive device.
