Explosive device unit responding to 'suspicious item' in View Royal

The public is being asked to stay away from the area

The RCMP Explosives Device Unit responded to a report of a "suspicious item" located in the 300-block of Island Highway in View Royal, according to the West Shore RCMP.

Police – who first responded to the report at around 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6 –  are creating a safety perimeter and surrounding residences and businesses are being notified.

Island Highway was closed in both directions between Helmcken Road and Jedburgh Road.

Photos of the scene, in front of the Salvation Army Thrift Store, show a fridge that has been taped shut with the words "Do Not Open" and "Call Bomb Squad" scribbled on the front.

"I think it's just like scary to think that somebody would target that, and also do they know what's in the fridge or did they just brought in the bomb squad just in case?" said one resident who lived nearby.

After examining the fridge RCMP reported that they determined it was not an explosive device.
