A transit bus displaying a “Call Police” destination sign that sparked concern in Langford and online was a false alarm, according to BC Transit.
“This display was not caused by an actual emergency and instead was a false alarm due to a technical malfunction on the bus that is being investigated,” transit said in a statement to Black Press Media.
“The use of an emergency display is an extremely rare occurrence on a BC Transit bus. This sign only shows on the outside of the bus and is used only when circumstances on board do not permit the driver to communicate out for emergency assistance through traditional means.”
It also happened in Victoria in late 2022.
In the most recent incident, someone spotted the message on Feb. 25 around 11 a.m. and not long later people voiced their concerns on social media. One person said thought the sign was to indicate the bus was not picking up passengers.
BC Transit cleared up the confusion with a statement that read: “The organization apologies for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused. Our operations team was in contact with local police and it was confirmed to be a false alarm that required no action.”
