A family out for an afternoon walk to Hole in the Wall natural attraction near Port Alberni had to be rescued after they found themselves off the main trail and in heavy brush on Sunday, May 25, 2025.

The two adults and four young children had unintentionally left the main trail, crossing creeks and bushwhacking through dense forest. "Fortunately they had cell service and were able to call for help," said Alberni Valley Rescue Squad spokesperson Amelie Duquette.

The squad's newly-formed drone team was able to get a clear aerial view of the area, which helped guide ground teams to the group's location, she said.

"Given the challenging conditions and the ages of the children, ranging from three to eight years old, our rope team was deployed to secure lines through the forest," Duquette said. "This provided much-needed support and safety for the children as they made their way out of the bush."

Duquette issued a reminder to people visiting Port Alberni: although the Hole in the Wall trail may appear short and straightforward, the surrounding network of trails and logging roads can be confusing and someone could easily get lost. Hikers and visitors are reminded to stay on marked trails, dress for conditions, bring food, water and essential supplies; use a GPS or offline map; and tell someone your planned route and expected return time.

"Even in warmer weather, temperatures can drop quickly in the evenings. Be prepared," she said.

The search capped a busy weekend for AVRS members, whose rookie members-in-training had just wrapped up their survival training weekend. Several other members renewed their hoist certification last week along with members of Arrowsmith SAR and Ascent Helicopters.
