A number of bus fare products are to be phased out by BC Transit in an effort to encourage more passengers to use its electronic fare system, Umo.
Starting Oct. 1, Greater Victoria residents travelling on fixed-route services will no longer be able to purchase ‘legacy fare products’, including 10-ride tickets, adult monthly passes and the student/senior monthly pass. Passengers still in possession of valid legacy tickets will still be able to travel up until the expiration date of their pass.
Instead, fare products sold for fixed-route transit services in the Victoria Regional Transit System will include:
- Umo cash balance;
- Onboard DayPASS;
- Digital DayPASS (automatically applied to a Umo app or Umo card after second Umo Cash Balance fare payment of the day);
- Adult 30-day pass;
- Concession 30-day pass.
BC Transit launched Umo in the Victoria Regional Transit System in Aug. 2023, introducing the Umo Mobility app and reloadable Umo cards. First launched in Victoria, the electronic fare system was rolled out across the province to 29 other transit systems.
Riders who have not yet transitioned to Umo are being encouraged by BC Transit to visit bctransit.com/umo for more information.
At a future date, BC Transit plans to provincially enable onboard payments with debit and credit cards.
BC Transit has also assured its passengers that cash and the Province of British Columbia’s B.C. bus pass will continue to be accepted.
Riders who travel exclusively on handyDART service or a combination of fixed-route and handyDART services will continue to be able to purchase sheets of 10 single ride tickets, adult monthly pass, and student/senior monthly pass fare products.
