Cyclists will soon have a great opportunity to register their bikes for free in Victoria.

A bike registration event is being held on Sept. 20 from noon to 3 p.m. outside the bike valet at Victoria City Hall.

Victoria police, Project 529 and City of Victoria staff will be registering bikes, answering questions and offering tips to help avoid bike theft.

All those interested will need to download the 529 Garage app.

The app is used by VicPD and many people around the world as a community watch for bike owners.

Users are encouraged to upload photos of their bikes so if they go missing, there is a community of people, who can be on the lookout.

The app can also be used to see if a bike someone is thinking of purchasing has been stolen and helps users maximize insurance claims.

Project 529 shields or decals will also be available at the Sept. 20 event.

The shields provide an extra layer of protection for bikes.

If a stolen bike with a shield is found, 529 Garage app users can quickly find the owner using the unique code on the decal.

More information about Project 529 and the 529 Garage app can be found at project529.com.
