A total of 43 volunteers joined forces on April 16 at Highrock Cairn Park for a hands-on habitat restoration event marking Esquimalt’s annual Earth Day celebration.
Organized by the Greater Victoria Green Team and the Township of Esquimalt, the event focused on removing invasive species of plant,s including English ivy and Himalayan blackberry.
Volunteers from all walks of life cleared 11 cubic metres of invasive plants from 200 square metres of forest.
The event also featured nature-based learning activities for local youth, information booths from environmental groups, and roaming goats assisting with invasive plant removal.
This was a return visit to Highrock Park following last year’s Earth Day efforts, where participants were able to see the growth of native wildflowers and trees planted in 2023.
The Greater Victoria Green Team returns to Esquimalt on Saturday, May 24 for a habitat restoration event at Gorge Park from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.
