Police departments from across the Greater Victoria area are reminding drivers, parents and students that school zones will be back in effect starting Tuesday, Sept. 3.

A Youtube video was posted featuring officers from Oak Bay Police, the Victoria Police Department, the Saanich Police Department and West Shore RCMP cautioning students on the dangers of commuting and drivers to be attentive and follow road laws as the school year approaches.

Police say speeding in school zones can result in a fine of nearly $200 or more and three penalty points on driver licenses. They also say drivers should stay alert while driving as distracted driving is a factor in nearly 40 per cent of crashes in the province.

"With school zones expected to be busy, it’s crucial to stay focused and avoid using your phone while driving," noted a news release from VicPD "Parents and caregivers are encouraged to speak with their children about staying attentive while commuting. Remind them to remove earbuds, put away devices, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing at designated crosswalks. Situational awareness is essential for their safety."

South Island police departments will be actively conducting school zone enforcement and education over the next month. For more information and safety tips, visit ICBC.
