Be sure to pack your sunscreen, ball cap and plenty of water today – it’s going to be a scorcher.

According to Environment Canada, temperatures are expected to soar to 29 C across Greater Victoria, including in Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Sidney and Langford, while the heat is expected to peak at 26 C in Sooke.

Temperatures will drop to 25 C on Tuesday, then dip to 22 on Wednesday. In Sooke, folks will see cooler temperatures – 23 on Tuesday and 19 on Wednesday.

Cloudy skies will take the place of sunny ones later this week, as temperatures drop to 17 on Friday and 21 on Saturday, with rain predicted both days.

This news comes as Environment Canada has issued heat warnings in the Island Health region from Aug. 10 to 12. Areas impacted include eastern Vancouver Island from Duncan to Campbell River and a large portion of inland Vancouver Island. The province has not declared an extreme heat emergency for these regions.

Island Health says that “with elevated temperatures, the risk of heat-related illness increases.” It adds that while everyone is at risk of heat-related illness, hot temperatures can be especially dangerous for folks over 65.

Infants, young children, pregnant people, people with chronic health conditions and mental illnesses, people who work outdoors and people who live alone or are socially isolated, homeless or unsheltered are also at risk of heat-related illnesses.
