An 80-year-old man cycling on the Trans Canada Highway was killed after he collided head-on with a van.
The incident occurred on Saturday (May 24) at approximately 5.20 p.m. in View Royal, just north of the Six Mile Road on-ramp.
In a statement, West Shore RCMP said the cyclist, who died at the scene, was travelling south on the right-hand shoulder of the northbound lane at the time of the collision.
A grey 2013 Toyota Sienna van was being driven by a 51-year-old man with a 15-year-old passenger, who were both taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The RCMP says the cause of the collision is still under investigation, however, they have ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors.
The incident was attended by BC Emergency Health Services, police and View Royal and Langford fire departments.
Northbound lanes on the highway were closed for several hours while the West Shore RCMP Traffic Unit and Vancouver Island Collision Reconstructionist examined the scene. The highway was reopened around 9.40 p.m.
Police are asking any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to come forward and provide their information. Anyone with a dash camera who was travelling on the Trans Canada Highway near the Six Mile Road on-ramp on May 24, between 5 and 5.30 p.m., is asked to contact the West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264.
"West Shore RCMP extends its condolences to the family and friends of the cyclist," said police. "We thank the public for their patience as emergency crews attended the scene as traffic was affected for a number of hours."
