One hundred years ago, the now defunct Victoria Cougars battled the Montreal Canadiens for the Stanley Cup – and won.

At a free event in Oak Bay at Windsor Park Pavillion on Thursday, March 20, local historian Helen Edwards will chronicle the team's historic win, and attendees will have a chance to ask questions.

The sports-lover's knowledge of Canada's game runs so deep, that she penned a definitive history of professional hockey in Victoria in which she summarizes every pro game played in town, starting with the debut of ice hockey here in an Oak Bay arena that burned down in 1929.

The talk coincides with a celebration slated to take place in Oak Bay on March 29, when the Stanley Cup is set to return to the Island. The district and the Victoria Hockey Legacy Society will host other events to mark the Cup's homecoming, including a ball hockey tournament, minor hockey skating clinics and a gala at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel.

More on the return of hockey's holy grail can be found at: vhls.ca/events.

Helen Edwards' lecture takes place on March 20 at 7 p.m. Donations are appreciated.
