High school basketball players hit the hardwood one last time this season for the 31st annual Vancouver Island Seniors Classic All-Star games.
Held Saturday, April 7 at the University of Victoria, the games feature the south and North Island’s best high school boys and girls players in the province’s longest-running high school all-star competition. There will be three games: boys all-star ‘B’ teams, and boys and girls ‘A’ teams.
The South girls team will be coached by Darren Reisig of Claremont Secondary. The team is made up of players from schools across Greater Victoria, including Stelly’s Secondary’s Caitlin Stewart and Jamie Cocu from Parkland Secondary.
The South boys ‘A’ team is coached by Scot Cuachon of Camosun College and the boys ‘B’ team is coached by Tyler Verde of St. Andrew’s School. Local players on the ‘B’ team are Conner McCullough from Parkland Secondary and Max Savallano from Stelly’s.
The all-star games are hosted by the South Vancouver Island Basketball Association, UVic Vikes Women’s Basketball, Braefoot Community Association and Accent Inns.
Over the last 10 years, the girls teams from the South have held the upper hand, winning six games. Both the boys ‘B’ side and ‘A’ side have been dominated by the North, who have taken eight of the last 10 matches.
The boys ‘B’ game gets started at 3 p.m. Tipoff for the girls game is 4:45 p.m. and the ‘A’ boys match goes at 6:30 p.m. on April 7. All game will be at the UVic CARSA High Performance Gym. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
