Mural OK to stay on heritage Bastion Square building in Victoria

Darcy's popular patio painting gets reprieve

A mural that turns heads on a heritage building in Bastion Square will stay thanks to a permit from the city.

After an interim permit expired in late summer 2024, Darcy’s Pub submitted a formal request to keep the mural on the two-storey 19th-century commercial building facing the Inner Harbour waterway at the corner of Wharf Street and Bastion Square.

“It is our understanding that there have been zero complaints from anyone regarding the mural. In fact, many visitors to both Darcy’s Pub and Bastion Square have been really enjoying its beauty over the past five years,” the pub wrote the city.

“The mural is a commemorative piece that acknowledges the presence of the service industry in Old Town over a long period of time, as well as representing contemporary youth culture. We respectfully propose that the mural be allowed to remain indefinitely.”

Decided during the Jan. 16 committee meeting, on Jan. 30, council officially approved the heritage alteration permit to keep the mural on the north side of the building, adjacent to the outdoor patio indefinitely.
