This year's Greek Fest is set to transport visitors straight to the heart of Greece without leaving Vancouver Island, thanks to an exciting new addition: the Agora Greek Market.
The 23rd Annual Greek Fest, running Aug. 23–25 and Aug. 30–Sept. 2 at the Greek Community Centre (4648 Elk Lake Drive next to Saanich Commonwealth Place), will debut an authentic Greek marketplace, offering attendees a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Greek culture beyond the traditional festival fare.
"We're thrilled to introduce the Agora Greek Market this year," said Tim Petropoulos, event organizer. "It's a chance for visitors to explore and take home a genuine piece of Greece."
The market, named after the central gathering spaces in ancient Greek city-states, will showcase a variety of Greek products rarely found in Victoria. Visitors can expect to find specialty foods, imported goods, and handcrafted items that reflect Greece's rich cultural heritage.
"From organic olive oils and traditional spices to handmade ceramics and textiles, the Agora will offer a taste of Greece that extends well beyond our festival grounds," Petropoulos explains.
This addition transforms Greek Fest from a primarily food and entertainment event into a more comprehensive cultural experience. While the festival has always been a celebration of Greek culture, the market allows for a deeper engagement with everyday Greek life.
Maria Papadopoulos, a local Greek-Canadian business owner, is excited to participate in the market.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to share authentic Greek products with the Victoria community," she says. "Many of these items aren't available in local stores, so it's a unique chance for people to discover new flavours and crafts."
The Agora Greek Market complements the festival's existing attractions, including its renowned food offerings, free live entertainment, and the Greek Heritage Museum.
"We see the market as an extension of our mission to share Greek culture," Petropoulos notes. "It's another way for visitors to connect with Greek traditions and perhaps spark an interest in visiting Greece itself."
The market will be open throughout the festival's run, from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Admission to Greek Fest, including access to the Agora Greek Market, remains free.
