The rising cost of food is a major challenge for Our Place, which makes its Hungry Hearts fundraiser incredibly important.

The Hungry Hearts Gala is taking place on Saturday (Sept. 9) at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort. The event will feature eight Greater Victoria chefs competing to make the most delicious dish.

Our Place is the largest provider of emergency meals in Greater Victoria.

“We need to find $175,000 this year alone just to purchase protein,” said kitchen manager Brian Cox in a news release.

Cox’s team serves more than 1,200 nutritious meals each day.

Gala attendees will have the chance to try each dish and vote for their favourite.

“It’s exciting to think that nine years ago, Hungry Hearts started out as a simple soup and sandwich competition amongst five local restaurants,” said Our Place CEO Julian Daly in a statement. “Now it has grown into the region’s favourite culinary gala fundraiser. Since its inception, the event has raised over a million dollars in support of vital programs and services provided to those struggling with poverty and homelessness in Greater Victoria.”

Our Place is also raising money with its best of the region online auction with over 200 items available at hibid.ca.

The auction closes at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.
