PHOTOS: Large crowds gather at Yellow Wolf Inter-tribal Powwow in Central Saanich

The event will return to its original Wutawnty name in 2024

Thousands of people packed into the gym at Stelly’s Secondary School for the 2023 Yellow Wolf Inter-tribal Powwow.

The event, which kicked off Friday and wrapped up Sunday, featured Indigenous drummers, dancers, vendors and much more.

This was the final year the event will be called the Yellow Wolf Inter-tribal Powwow, as it will be returning to its original Wutawnty name in 2024.

Angel Sampson and her family have organized the powwow for 28 years. Sampson’s son is named Yellow Wolf, which was also the name of a warrior under Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce people. Her mother’s traditional name is Wutawnty.

The powwow is an event imported to the lands of the Coast Salish from the Sampson family’s roots with the Nez Perce Nation in Idaho. Younger members of Sampson’s family have begun taking on more organizational roles from their elders.
