Pickleball hub: 11 new courts on their way to Victoria's Topaz Park

Topaz Park recreation options explode with new courts, alongside recently added bike, skate parks

Pickleball courts are set to rise in Topaz Park this summer for the second phase of improvements to the Hillside/Quadra green space. Victoria is adding an 11-court pickleball hub, a new outdoor fitness area, a central gathering space, a misting station and connecting pathways.

The construction of a new hub helps meet increasing demand for pickleball facilities in Victoria and supports the city’s strategic plan goal to improve recreational sports amenities.

“We are tremendously excited at the news of the groundbreaking,” said Roger Graves, president of the Victoria Regional Pickleball Association. “This will be a fantastic facility, and we can’t wait to get on the courts.”

The sport is blowing up in the region, with the association reporting a 300-per-cent jump in membership since October 2021, with 680 members in July 2023 and nearly 900 to start 2024.

The courts, expected to be complete by fall, will be adjacent to the skate and bike parks that opened in 2022.

"I’m pleased to see the next phase of Topaz Park improvements take shape,” Mayor Marianne Alto said in a news release. “These features invite more residents of all ages to explore and enjoy this new active play space in Topaz Park.”

During construction, a section of the Glasgow Street parking lot will be closed and traffic may periodically be impacted on the adjacent street. The nearby skate park, playground and sports fields will remain open.
