A man who police say returned to the scene of a domestic dispute on Tuesday night (April 2) was arrested after he fled officers in Saanich and allegedly threatened them while holding a knife.

The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) was called in to assist in the arrest after Saanich police said its officers had to prevent the man from fleeing again after he returned to the site of the dispute.

Police arrived at a Gorge Road West home around 7:40 p.m. after being called about a domestic dispute, but the man who was reportedly involved had already left when officers arrived.

The man was later found in the Royal Oak area, but he fled at a high speed when officers approached to arrest him. The man was not followed as Saanich police said it chose to locate him by other means.

Police responded to the home where the dispute took place after being notified the man had returned to the site around 10:30 p.m. Police found the man in his vehicle upon arriving and prevented him from fleeing again, the Saanich department said in a Wednesday statement.

GVERT was called after the man refused to get out of his vehicle. Police said he then showed a knife and threatened to harm officers as he exited his vehicle. Officers responded by firing a beanbag round at the man, who then retreated to his vehicle.

A taser was also used on the man before he was arrested and taken to the hospital to be assessed. Police said nobody received “significant injuries” from the incident.
