Victoria is now home to the Capital Regional District's first Queer curling club.
Created to introduce LGBTQQIP2SA+ folks to the roaring game, the club, called Throw Rocks, Not Shade (TRNS), is set to host a Queer curling class on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 8:15 p.m. at the Victoria Curling Club.
“Curling is a low-barrier sport with amazing adaptability for all ages and skill levels," Amanda Lynne Ballard, TRNS's founder, said in a news release. “Curling’s strong social aspect, in combination with the sport’s accessibility are key drivers on why we feel these efforts will be embraced by the Queer community.”
The event costs $25 to attend, which includes rental equipment, ice time and a lesson. Attendees are invited to warm up afterward at the VCC's Stone's Throw Lounge.
"We are incredibly proud to host this historic event," James Keogh, the VCC's general manager, said in the same news release. "The Victoria Curling Club recognizes its commitment to diversity is best realized through strong partnerships and collaborations, such as with TRNS. We believe that curling is a sport for everyone, and we are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all."
