The wildest part of Central Saanich is home to the latest cougar sightings on the Saanich Peninsula.
Multiple confirmed wildcat sightings in Centennial Park and Saanichton on Monday (April 21) evening prompted a police reminder on wildlife etiquette.
Officers attempted to locate the cougar reported running north along Wallace Drive toward Mt. Newton Cross Road, Central Saanich police said in an alert.
The animal was last seen near Mt. Newton Cross Road at East Saanich Road.
“Please use caution while out walking in the area. Conservation officers have been advised of the animal's presence. While cougars are normally stealthier, this is not unusual for the time of year, given our proximity to rural/farm and park lands,” the police service said.
The BC Conservation Officer Service generally advises residents to be aware of their surroundings, keep an eye on children and pets, particularly near dawn and dusk, avoid hiking or jogging alone, and to make noise when possible.
Anyone who sees a cougar should not approach, but maintain a safe distance and back away slowly. Never run.
Usually encountered near dusk and dawn when cougars are most active, the animals are generally elusive and rarely attack humans. If a cougar attacks, fight back.
