Road closures announced as Royal Victoria Marathon approaches

Road closures will affect traffic on Oct. 12 and 13

Traffic in James Bay, Fairfield, Oak Bay, Uplands and the Inner Harbour will be affected this weekend, as thousands of runners and walkers take part in five Royal Victoria Marathon races.

On Saturday, Oct. 12, the 5K race and Thrifty Foods Kids Run will begin and end at Willows Beach. To accommodate runners, the Willows Beach Esplanade will be closed from 6 a.m. to noon. Beach Drive, between Dalhousie Street and Humber Road, will also be closed from 8 to 10 a.m.

To help set up for the marathon, half-marathon and 8K races on Sunday, Oct. 13, Belleville Street, between Oswego and Government streets, and Menzies Street, between Belleville and Quebec streets, will also be closed from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

On Sunday, the race routes (see images above) will be closed to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians until runners have finished. Traffic personnel will assist anyone crossing the route when it is safe to do so. No parking is allowed on the race routes. Cars will be towed from the course on Sunday, starting at 1 a.m.

Race organizers have also listed the following Sunday closures:

  • Belleville Street, between Oswego and Government streets, from noon to 6 p.m. 
  • Menzies Street, between Belleville and Quebec street, from noon. to 6 p.m.  
  • Kingston Street, between Oswego and Menzies street – 3 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 
  • Kingston Street, between Quebec and Superior street – 3 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 
  • Quebec Street, between Oswego and Menzies streetf – 3 to 10 a.m.
