The Town of Sidney has unanimously approved the installation of a veterans remembrance crosswalk near the cenotaph at the municipal hall.

The decision was made during Monday (June 23) night's council meeting, marking a significant addition to the town's tribute to veterans, which also includes a memorial marker at Beacon Park to recognize Sgt. Patrick Tower for his valiant action in Afghanistan.

The proposal, initially presented by former town crier Kenny Podmore on behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 37 in February, has been met with widespread support.

Podmore expressed his gratitude to the town, particularly the engineering department, for their assistance throughout the process.

The crosswalk, to be located at the intersection of Sidney Avenue and Fourth Street, aims to serve as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans.

"Sidney remembers...we should never forget," Podmore emphasized.

He also hopes it will resonate with the town's growing population of young people, ensuring the legacy of remembrance endures for generations to come.

The crosswalk is expected to be named either "Veterans Remembrance Crosswalk" or "Remembrance Crosswalk," with Podmore favouring the latter.

The design will feature alternating red and white stripes, mirroring the colours of the poppy flower, a symbol of remembrance.

Signs bearing the words "Lest we forget" will be placed on either side of the crossing, further highlighting its significance.

Funded through the town's annual operating budgets, the crosswalk, the first on the Peninsula, is slated to be completed in time for this year's Remembrance Day ceremonies.
