Saanich council unanimously supported a motion to secure the entirety of the units of a six-storey development to be maintained as rental units for 50 years – or the life of the building – at the July 14 council meeting.
“I think it's very good whenever we can secure 68 units,” said Coun. Colin Plant. “That's a positive for our community and I thank the applicant for working with the district.”
This decision comes after Saanich council unanimously supported a rezoning and development permit for a six-storey building at its June 9 meeting. The 68-unit rental apartment building proposed by Rizzo Developments is set to be on Harriet Road and Whittier Avenue.
The building will include six studios, 41 one-bedrooms, 15 two-bedrooms, and six three-bedroom units.
The project will also feature one level of underground parking with 43 stalls, 68 bicycle parking spaces, and nine visitor bike spots. A landscaped courtyard, raised garden beds, and rain gardens are also planned for the site.
The building will be secured as rental for 50 years or the life of the building, exempting it from community amenity contributions. Final approval depends on registering housing, transportation, and pathway agreements on the title.
Council is expected to give this application a final reading at a future meeting.
