Saanich is hosting a free Earth Day festival in the district’s municipal hall parking lot on April 20, with live music, food trucks and educational activities scheduled between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
“The goal of this event is to encourage families to be active outdoors together, play games, and learn about how we can all take climate action,” said Saanich Coun. Nathalie Chambers in a news release. Chambers is the district’s Sustainability and Climate Action Advisory Committee chair.
It being Earth Day, the district is encouraging attendees to come by bike or public transport, if possible. The parking lot is accessible by bike just off the Lochside Regional Trail. There will also be a bike skills course for kids at the festival.
Keen bike riders can also get involved in powering the music stage with a pedal-to-power system using stationary bikes provided by Tune Your Ride.
The festival lineup includes music from Nick Mintenko at 11 a.m., Penny Belle at 12:30 p.m. and Kele Fleming at 2:00 p.m.
There will also be a free button booth for people to make their own Earth Day buttons.
Other events include a make-your-own beeswax wrap workshop led by Goldilocks Goods. For that event people need to buy a ticket, though pricing has not yet been announced.
Organizations with environmentally-friendly products from solar panels to e-bikes to urban farms will also have booths set up for attendees to peruse.
