Crews knocked down a fire at a home in the Gordon Head neighbourhood on Monday (May 27) morning.
Nobody was inside the San Juan Avenue home and neighbours told firefighters that it’s been abandoned.
“We’ve been through the building, 100 per cent it’s not occupied,” Saanich Fire department Capt. Charlie Rivers said at the scene as crews were packing up shortly after 11:00 a.m.
When firefighters arrived, the blaze was all the way up the back of the home. Crews knocked those flames down quickly from the back of the house before they moved inside to extinguish the rest, Rivers said.
The home is surrounded by trees on the property, on a street with mainly single-family homes. No damage could be seen from the street.
Asked if the incident was being considered suspicious, Rivers said fire investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze as it’s uncommon for something to happen in a vacant building. He added nothing was initially evident in terms of what might’ve started the fire.
“My understanding is the house has been vacant for a number of years.”
