Residents of Saanich and beyond gathered under cloudy skies to honour Canada’s fallen armed forces members during the annual Remembrance Day ceremony at the district’s cenotaph on the grounds of municipal hall.
The Nov. 11 ceremony in Saanich also paid tribute to those currently serving in Canada’s military.
The commemoration began at 10:45 a.m. with a military parade, followed by the lowering of the flag and a solemn two-minute silence at 11 a.m., honouring those who sacrificed their lives for Canada’s freedom.
Local dignitaries and representatives laid wreaths at the cenotaph, with reflective readings throughout the event expressing gratitude for those who served.
People of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life attended the event to pay their respects.
“Remembrance Day means a lot of things,” said a woman in attendance. “It's not just about the First and Second World War, people are still out there and we've had a lot lost in Afghanistan and even in Bosnia.
“We've got to pay respect to the people who put their lives on the line for others.”
For others, the event had a profound symbolic meaning.
“For me, it's about reflecting back,” said Arnie Campbell. “I was with the armed forces as a reservist for probably 25 years. I have family who are long past now that were all military people during the First and the Second World Wars.
“Although you're not required to be here, it's important to be here.”
