Saanich PD ticketed a driver under the provincial Wildfire Act for throwing a cigarette butt out their car window.

Police say they hope it serves as a reminder for residents of the dangers attached to improper cigarette disposal amid dry conditions and extreme provincial forest fire ratings.

Saanich PD tweeted a photo of the ticket issued to a driver on Aug. 18 at the Trans Canada Highway and McKenzie Avenue intersection.

The driver was ticketed $575 under the description of “drop, release or mishandle burning substance,” section 3(1) of the BC Wildfire Act.

“Please discard your cigarette butts accordingly, and not out your window,” the Tweet read. “Especially given the current fire ratings here in Saanich and across our province.”
