Saanich police have removed 580 impaired drivers from the municipality's roads so far this year, setting a new record for Immediate Roadside Prohibitions since the program began in 2010.
“In early September, we surpassed the total number of impaired drivers taken off the road in all of 2023 which was 468,” said Cst. Martin Roznowski. “As of Nov. 30 of this year, we have reached a total of 580 impaired drivers taken off streets this holiday season, reminding drivers to drink and think responsibly.”
In 2024, the Saanich Police have taken 580 impaired drivers off Saanich Roads, setting a record for Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPs) since the introduction of the program in 2010.

The record-breaking number comes ahead of December’s increased counterattack roadblocks, where officers will target drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol.
Police are urging residents to plan their outings accordingly during the holiday season by using taxis, ride shares, public transit, or designated drivers. Authorities stress there is no excuse for driving while impaired.
