Saanich has released an updated version of its Housing Needs Report (HNR), now available for public viewing on its website.
The report offers a current assessment of both existing and future housing needs in Saanich, aiming to guide the municipality's efforts to provide housing that meets the community’s diverse requirements.
The report outlines that the district needs 7,683 housing units over the next 5 years and 23,559 for the next 20 years to meet the forecasted demand.
Between 2006 and 2021, the number of households in Saanich grew by 7.8 per cent from 44,570 to 48,045. In that same period, the municipality grew by 3.1 per cent, from 114,148 to 117,735 residents. As of 2021, Saanich residents made up 28.3 per cent of the CRD’s population.
Over the next 10 years, the district's population is projected to grow more rapidly than it did between 2011 and 2021. Projections suggest that Saanich could grow by an additional 6,225 residents from 2023 to 2028.
The report outlines the number of housing units needed over the next five and 20 years, based on data from the 2021 census. It also includes updated population and dwelling statistics, projections for population and households, actions taken by the district since the last HNR, and highlights key areas of housing need among other things.
In 2025, work will be done to align the findings from the 2024 HNR with the official community plan and other important policies and bylaws.
