Businesses come and go, but some are so iconic that their owners leave an indelible mark on a community.
That’s true of Maria’s Deli at 4080 Shelbourne St. in Saanich. The family behind the deli has announced that the business is closing down after 46 “remarkable years” of selling fresh food and imported goods.
The final day for the deli will be on Aug. 31.
“Throughout the years, Maria’s Deli has become more than just a place to enjoy delicious European imports; it has become a cherished part of our lives,” reads a Facebook post by Maria and Susan, the family behind the business. “It has been an honour to serve you and be a part of your lives, witnessing the growth of families and the passing of time. We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support and love you have shown us.
“The memories created within these walls are precious to us. From lively conversations to heartfelt laughter, every experience has been a testament to the warmth that our customers have brought into our lives.”
The announcement unleashed an outpouring of affection from longtime customers in more than 100 responses.
“You will be greatly missed for sure … hubby and me love to drive by and get our fave Portuguese sandwich,” wrote one person.
“I’ll need to come by and see you,” wrote another. “Need to have that ricotta one more time and maybe some cold cuts lol. Sad about this. Good luck!”
“Happy retirement! So sad to see you closing,” wrote another customer. “My husband and daughter would always walk over for mortadella and havarti on a Portuguese bun for lunch.”
“But where will I load up on my Borges chorizo?! We will miss you! Thank you for providing so many years of Portuguese food and culture in your community, and all the very best in retirement or the next chapter.”
