A spring tragedy continues to inspire community care in Oak Bay.

A garage sale set for Saturday on Cranmore Road will raise funds for the family of a public works employee killed by a driver on the morning of May 17 while on the job.

Oak Bay resident Steve Seekins, a 52-year-old husband and father of two, was working on a sidewalk when he was struck and killed by an SUV driven by a 66-year-old Victoria woman. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation by police, WorkSafe and the BC Coroners Service.

Seekins started working with the district about six months prior to his death. As an auxiliary worker, he joined a variety of crews, filling roles as needed.

The man was genuine and easy going, Steve Rennick, deputy director of engineering and public works, told the Oak Bay News.

“He loved his wife and kids, talked about them all the time … He was really excited to get to work in Oak Bay.”

Funds from the garage sale – July 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2670 Cranmore Rd. – will go to the Seekins family.

For those who miss the opportunity but want to support, an ongoing fundraiser remains online at bit.ly/3Ipgq0T. It has raised just over $122,000 to date.
