Tossing carcasses out in the open is rarely advisable, let alone considered beneficial or encouraged by local authorities and the community. However, a one-of-a-kind experience flips this notion on its head.

If that sounds intriguing, PKOLS – Mount Douglas Conservancy, in partnership with the Howard English Goldstream Hatchery, invites everyone to join their annual salmon carcass transplant.

The event’s main goal is to restore the ecological balance of Douglas Creek and replenish the surrounding ecosystem with nutrients essential for supporting local biodiversity.

Another goal of the event is to inform the public about the importance of this process with educational talks by fisheries experts and biologists present on the scene.

Last year, more than 100 attendees rolled up their sleeves for a good cause.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m., at the Douglas Creek Bridge and Outdoor Classroom. Parking is available at the Beach Parking Lot, accessible via Cordova Bay Road. To reach the creek, follow the nearby Douglas Trail.
