A group of downtown businesses just launched a social media campaign to encourage Victorians to shop local.

Using consistent messaging and similar graphics, the businesses, which include Nezza Naturals, Green Cuisine and Kaboodles, posted on social channels together.

"Rent, supplies, staffing, insurance, safety concerns and taxes all contribute to the challenges of doing business in Victoria and worldwide," the Downtown Victoria Business Association said in a news release. "This tactic demonstrates ... the solidarity of the downtown business community."

Lili Butterfield, the owner of downtown boutiques The Dancing Lily and LADS Clothing, sparked the idea.

“We wanted to showcase our downtown as it's unique with so many small, locally owned businesses,” she said. “Our social media campaign showcases our businesses and the faces of us and staff who will greet you this holiday season with the message to shop local, eat local and visit local."

Participating businesses rolled out the campaign quickly to align with the free parking offered by the Downtown Victoria Business Association, Robbins Parking and the Bay Centre on Nov. 23.

"Downtown Victoria is home to so many one-of-a-kind businesses you won’t find anywhere else. It’s where many of the city’s oldest and most beloved shops have thrived for generations,” Teri Hustins, the owner of toy and gift stores Oscar & Libby’s and Two Otters, said in the same release. “Each of these small businesses is run by a dedicated local who brings their passion to the community every single day."
