The boat launch at Songhees Nation is out of order after heavy use shifted asphalt and exposed an archeological site.

The nation took to social media to alert its residents and remind the general public that the launch is for community members or those with specific permission only.

“This boat launch is located down a private road and on reserve lands and is not for public use,” the nation said in a post. “Unfortunately, there have been contractors and others who have continued to use it, degrading the asphalt over time.”

Songhees Land and Environment staff closed the launch after particularly heavy equipment used the area the week of Jan.13 damaging the asphalt further, exposing an archeologic site below.

The closure is temporary.

"Historically the Nation has investigated the significance of this particular site, however, we will review the area further as we plan to repair the ramp for private member usage," Songhees said in a Jan. 22 statement. "We are committed to preventing further erosion, trespassing and protecting any cultural or historical items that may be at risk."
