Sooke Music and Arts Festival kicks off Aug. 2.

Summer celebrations in Sooke are far from over as the 10th edition of the Sooke Music and Arts Festival draws closer.

Festivities will begin on Saturday, Aug. 2, with a free opening party at the Sooke Legion, ahead of the mainstage concert on Aug. 8, followed by a day of free family fun.

"This year is gearing up to be the biggest festival we've ever done. We have more vendors, more volunteers, bigger acts and more family activities than we ever have before," said Frankie Lawrence, a festival co-ordinator.

"Community spirit is high, and we're anticipating a large turnout. This is a great event, especially for those who are tired of 'parking lot' festivals and yearn to feel the grass beneath their feet as they enjoy a weekend with friends and family."

The opening party will feature performances by Redefined, The Wet Soul and KAT, who will set the tone for the following weekend of music, art and community connection.

Saturday's mainstage concert will feature Canadian alt-rock icons Econoline Crush headlining an evening of high-energy performances. Apex Breaks, Tae Voda, Basin Boys, Carolyn Mark and DJ Natty will also take the stage. The show will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, at Fred Milne Park.

On Aug. 9, Fred Milne Park will host a day of family-friendly performances and activities. SirReal, Phonosonics, Gord Phillips, TYPOH, Kele Fleming, the Kat Kadoski Trio, Tremblers of Sevens and the Sooke Jazz Band, among others, are set to take the stage from noon to 10 p.m. Art activities and interactive experiences will also be available, making for a vibrant close to the festival's 10th year.

“We’re proud to present a fully Canadian lineup and to honour the spirit of Sooke with something for everyone — whether you’re coming for the music, the art or simply the atmosphere,” said Peter Jonassen, festival organizer.
